Six countries. Three bikes. One document pack per motorcycle. A practical guide for Spanish-plated motorcycles arriving by air freight in Buenos Aires.
Sources checked: 9 October 2026 · Recheck before departure and each border.
Do not buy one regional policy and assume the borders are solved. Third-party liability pays covered claims by others; compulsory accident policies such as SOAPEX/SOAT address bodily injury under local rules. Neither automatically replaces the other, nor cargo insurance, theft/own-damage cover or rider medical/evacuation insurance.
Spanish plates change the answer.
Spain’s international Green Card and the MERCOSUR “Carta Verde” are different systems. Regional third-party cover/Carta Verde is NOT automatically valid for Spanish plates. Ask for written acceptance of the actual motorcycle, plate/VIN, each destination and dates, with a certificate accepted locally. A marketing list of countries is not enough.
Request Argentina liability and any regional extension now. Give the cargo agent proof before release; confirm the effective collection date and release requirements.
02
Before the first Chile crossing
Buy SOAPEX online; download proof. Include all planned Chile entries and allow for route delays.
03
Before each northern border
Confirm Bolivia’s exemption conditions, arrange Peru SOAT before entry, resolve Ecuador with authorities, and pre-arrange Colombia foreign-vehicle SOAT. These are separate steps.
04
At every crossing & renewal
Check dates, territory, plate/VIN and claims contact. Keep offline and paper copies for each bike. Re-buy only when a new policy or renewal is actually needed; do not rely on border vendors or connectivity.
Country by country.
Requirements are source-backed below. Purchase steps are planning recommendations, not guaranteed issuance or a border-service promise.
Required · issue before arrival
Argentina
Third-party liability must be valid before riding. Arrange a policy explicitly accepting Spanish-registered motorcycles, effective by the Buenos Aires collection date. Send proof to the air-freight/customs agent before cargo release; confirm its exact release checklist in writing. The road-insurance obligation is verified; a universal air-cargo release rule was not established by the sources reviewed.
How & when
Before flying: send plate, VIN, registration, passport and dates to an insurer or licensed broker. Obtain the policy and compulsory certificate for each motorcycle. Confirm territory, dates, claims contact and whether regional extensions accept Spanish plates. No verified Spain-plate purchase channel is listed yet.
Foreign vehicles temporarily entering Chile need SOAPEX unless a specific applicable insurance agreement exempts them. Do not assume an exemption for Spanish plates. It covers death and bodily injury, not motorcycle damage or general third-party property liability. CMF identifies a new policy wording for contracts from 9 February 2026.
How & when
Buy online before the first Chilean border. Select motorcycle and Spain, enter the exact plate and requested vehicle data, pay, and download the certificate. HDI’s own SOAPEX product page is verified; acceptance of your precise plate/payment must be checked during quoting. Cover every Chilean riding date, including Patagonia re-entries; confirm repeated entries in writing.
APS’s published DS 27295, article 5(a), exempts foreign-plated vehicles entering provisionally or temporarily for a maximum period of 30 days. Article 5 still places the SOAT-level indemnity obligation on those civilly or criminally responsible for an accident. An exemption is not accident cover.
How & when
Before crossing: carry the temporary-admission document, entry date and a saved copy of article 5. Ask APS/UNIVida or the border authority to confirm application to your stay. The available consolidated text is updated to November 2019; current application, extensions and re-entry counting need confirmation. Do not interpret this as a guaranteed free first 30 days of a longer stay. Ask UNIVida how to insure a Spanish plate if the exemption does not apply.
SUNAT’s current tourism-vehicle guidance says accident insurance must be valid for the entire stay. Arrange SOAT before entering so you can ride legally from the border. An older SUNAT legal report distinguishes customs admission from the separate requirement before circulation; do not rely on that distinction to ride uninsured.
How & when
Before reaching the border, contact a Peruvian insurer or authorized agent and request issuance for a Spanish-plated motorcycle. Send registration, plate/VIN and dates; ask whether the temporary-entry certificate is needed to finalize issuance. If it is, arrange the process in advance and do not ride onward until cover is active. Foreign-plate online checkout and a specific provider are not verified.
SPPAT provides a public traffic-accident protection system and a vehicle-registration-linked fee. The reviewed official pages do not settle the fee, liability-insurance requirement or proof needed for a temporarily imported Spanish-plated motorcycle. Do not publish or rely on “no insurance needed”, automatic foreign-bike protection, or a supposed Ecuador SOAT purchase.
How & when
Before Ecuador: ask SPPAT, ANT and SENAE/customs for written confirmation of foreign temporary-vehicle obligations, any payment/certificate, victim protection and liability cover. Separately ask your insurer to confirm Ecuador territorial cover for each bike. Keep this country marked unresolved until official answers are obtained.
SOAT is required for vehicles circulating in Colombia. The SFC describes issuance for foreign vehicles entering through border zones, with a minimum 15-day term and extensions by 15 days or whole months. Confirm the policy term for your entire route, not just the border area.
How & when
Contact a channel in the SFC’s current foreign-vehicle sales directory before the Ecuador–Colombia crossing. Submit ownership/registration and policyholder identity; confirm Spanish motorcycle acceptance, issuance date and payment method. PSE may require a Colombian bank account. Obtain active proof before riding. The regulator verifies offices/email channels; a standard domestic online checkout is not proof it accepts foreign plates.
For the three riders: repeat every check three times. A group receipt does not replace vehicle-specific proof. Each bike must be identified by its own plate and VIN/chassis in its policy documents; check how those identifiers appear on the certificate.
Ecuador: foreign-bike liability, SPPAT payment/protection and required proof. Argentina: a verified issuer for Spanish plates and your agent’s air-cargo release checklist. Bolivia: current application of article 5, extensions and re-entry counting. Peru/Colombia: actual issuance, payment and effective dates for your three motorcycles. No quotes or purchases have been made.
This guide covers the six-country South America leg. Central America and Mexico need their own insurance checks before continuing north. Use the Spanish share link for the group and print or save this guide as a PDF for offline reference.
